PROJECT CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES
Radio Free FM launched the Danube StreamWaves project in 2016 to connect community radios in the Danube region, counteracting the drift between Eastern and Western Europe, and creating new “live” and digital productions in various program formats. A particularly important concern is supporting media pluralism, which is severely limited globally. The fourth edition of this long-term project is taking place under the name Danube Sound Map during the period 2023 – 2024.
WHO AND WHAT
Radio Free FM Ulm, Civil Radio, and Eper Radio Budapest, along with Radio FRO, Linz, and Podcast.rs, Belgrade, are implementing the fourth phase of the Danube StreamWaves project. With financial support from the BW Foundation, partners from 4 Danube cities are working intensively together to create an internet podcast platform covering cultural, historical, ecological, political, touristic, ethnological, and other characteristic topics of the Danube region.
HOW
Thematic podcasts are being produced in collaboration with local civic groups, cultural and scientific institutions, and will then be made available on an interactive online map, effectively creating a “sound map” of the Danube. The podcasts will be broadcasted as a series on FM, rotating through each partner radio, and will also be uploaded to the podcast.rs platform, as well as on a subdomain of the project itself (LINK). Through four international in-person workshops, all four main partners will enhance their understanding of audio production techniques and best practices. After the project, the sound map will be used locally in conjunction with local partners (such as museums and cultural institutions) for public relations actions, functioning as an audio geocache. For instance, temporary audio exhibitions will be conducted in collaboration with museums or other institutions, and audio geocaches will be placed at designated locations. Listeners can then visit these locations and use cell phones to listen to the recordings located on the sound map.
FOLLOW-UP
The sound map will continue to be used for further actions and by special interest groups after the project concludes. The aim is for it to be accessible to other actors in the Danube Region as well. In this way, the Danube Sound Map will continue to grow and contribute to fostering connections among professionals and broader citizen groups across the Danube Region.
